Juneteenth: June 19th

“Now, therefore I, Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States,…order and declare that all persons held as slaves within said designated States, and parts of States, are, and henceforward shall be free…”

Juneteenth is the celebration of the anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation which was issued by US President Abraham Lincoln on January 1st, 1863. The proclamation gave the Southern slaves their freedom and is considered an important benchmark in the African-American struggle for freedom and equality.

The word “Juneteenth” comes from the words “June” and “19th”, which according to southern folklore is when the slaves of Texas first learned of their freedom. Though technically freed in 1863, the slaves did not learn of their freedom until the arrival of the Union soldiers on June 19th, 1865. This was after the end of the Civil War and 2 1/2 years after the proclamation was first issued.

The Emancipation Proclamation is considered the catalyst that ended slavery. But at the time the proclamation was issued it really did not free anyone since the Confederate states did not recognize President Lincoln’s authority. It was not until after the Civil War had ended that the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution, ratified in 1865, officially outlawed slavery.

Juneteenth began as a celebration by ex-slaves and has continued to be observed by African-Americans in the US South. Recently there have been efforts to bring a wider audience to the celebrations.

New Mexico, are you ready for this?

We leave for Albuquerque on Wednesday.
Mason will fly for the first time!
Great Grandpa and Great Grandma, are you sure you’re ready for this monster?!?!

Mason has mastered the stairs now too. Watch out!

We have also learned how to eat Cheerios. He can’t get enough. It’s really cute too because he sits there and chews it with his gums.

It wasn’t all that warm out but Mason played in the hose anyway. This kid is a fish!

Cute Video

My cousin posted this on her blog because her boys love it so much. I had Mason watch it and he’s hooked now too. It’s cute and has a catchy little tune. We love Nickel Creek so it was cool for us to listen to also.

Mason wants to go!
He was a little fussy here because I had him do it over and over
before I got smart and went to get the camera.

I can’t believe he’s going to be 9 months in a couple weeks!
This time last year I was still pregnant! (and very ready to not be)

Travels through MD

Filed under: Uncategorized — gmucheeky @ 12:10 am

We decided to something special today and to travel to Andrew’s Air Force Base for the air show. It was free, except the gas to get there and it would be cool to see the Blue Angels flying. We were to drive to Fed Ex Field and take a shuttle to the base. We checked the website before we left to get the latest information and off we went. Michael and I are not fans of Maryland at all. We have always joked that it’s like traveling to another country. As soon as you cross the state line everything looks different, the road, the signs, everything. So this was a big deal for us to travel up there for this event. After many traffic issues we got there an hour and a half later! We were tired and ready to get out of the car. There was a cop blocking the road where we needed to go so I rolled my window down and politely asked him how we get to the shuttles. He told me that the shuttles had stopped running and the base was closed because they reached full capacity, but I could come back tomorrow. At this point I just wanted to cry, Mason was tired of being in the car and screaming at the top of his lungs. So we decided to take a side trip to Glen Echo Park to get a break from the car. We traveled the entire beltway today, that is one BIG circle! All in all it turned out ok but I am bummed we didn’t get to see the Blue Angels and I am NOT going back tomorrow.

The Mormon temple.

Glen Echo Park
Mason was not happy about the closure of the base. He wanted out of the car!

Mason rode his first carousel today. Michael took him because I get so sick going in circles. I got queasy just watching them.

It was nice to see Mason smiling after such a rough start to our trip.

Mother’s Day

Filed under: Uncategorized — gmucheeky @ 5:47 pm

I had a great first Mother’s Day. We spent the morning with Michael’s family in DC and the evening with my family. Mason got me a Wii and a digital photo frame. We have had hours of fun! My mom got me the Deceptively Delicious Cookbook. I can’t wait to try it out on Mason and Michael! Michael will get those veggies somehow. Liz got me a spa gift certificate. I can’t wait to use it and get a little pampering. It’s amazing what becoming a mother does to you. I understand the importance of the day now.
